Recycle BC

Building Trust in Recycling Through Experiential Learning

In September 2025, SOMA partnered with Recycle BC to support the launch of a new two-year interactive recycling exhibit developed in collaboration with Science World.

Despite British Columbia’s high recycling participation rates, persistent myths, misunderstandings, and knowledge gaps remain, particularly around plastic packaging. Questions like What actually happens to my recycling once it’s collected? How are materials sorted? Are they really turned into new products? continue to shape public perception and trust.

Recycle BC set out to address these questions head-on through an immersive, educational exhibit designed to make the recycling journey tangible and engaging for children and families.

The result was a hands-on, interactive exhibit featuring games for kids, facts, infographics, and real-world visuals that bring BC’s residential recycling system to life. Designed for families and school groups, the exhibit encourages visitors to learn together, build better recycling habits, and feel more confident participating in the system.

What We Did

SOMA leaned into visual, people-centred storytelling to transform the exhibit launch into a moment that felt dynamic, participatory, and media-ready.

Our team:

  • Invited elementary school classes from surrounding schools, reinforcing the exhibit’s educational value

  • Engaged local parent and lifestyle influencers with school-aged children to create authentic, family-focused storytelling

  • Brought together local stakeholders to broaden reach and credibility

  • Designed a live “sorting challenge” using the exhibit’s interactive games, enhanced with trivia and prizes to encourage participation and energy

  • Led end-to-end event logistics, from catering and refreshments to photography and guest list coordination, ensuring a smooth launch and strong visual outcomes.

By activating the exhibit in real time and centering the experience around children and families, we helped create an unforgettable unveiling that translated seamlessly into broadcast coverage and organic social media content.
