Food Waste Innovation
SOMA worked with one of Light House’s Circular Construction Accelerator (CCA) companies, Ergo Eco Solutions, to raise awareness of a pilot project delivered in partnership with the Malahat Nation on Vancouver Island.
The pilot tested Ergo Eco’s new bio-based dust suppressant made from recycled food waste sourced from local restaurants and commercial kitchens. Applied to unpaved roads, the solution reduces dust without the need for frequent watering... the standard approach that places strain on local water supplies.
The story highlights circular innovation, turning food waste from local businesses that would otherwise go to landfill into a biodegradable product that addresses dust and air-quality challenges on BC’s unpaved roads. With more than 90% of roads in the province unpaved, the solution has significant potential for communities and businesses across BC.
