Hometown Heroes Lottery Funding Helps Power Critical Care at VGH

On November 4, 2024, Julia Kwan was struck by a dump truck and suffered life-threatening injuries.

She sustained catastrophic trauma, including internal bleeding, a ruptured spleen and multiple fractures, prompting medical teams to act quickly to stabilize her condition. Over the following nine weeks, the trauma team at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) provided intensive, life-saving care, including eight surgeries and extensive rehabilitation support.

More than a year later, Kwan continues to recover physically and emotionally while navigating post-traumatic stress and additional surgeries. She now approaches life with deep gratitude for the care she received at VGH.

Today, Kwan is sharing her story in support of Hometown Heroes Lottery, which raises funds for critical medical equipment and patient care across British Columbia, including at VGH, while also supporting firefighter-led burn and trauma programs.

The lottery supports VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, helping fund essential equipment and specialized care at VGH, UBC Hospital, G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre and other Vancouver Coastal Health sites. Each ticket sold also supports the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund. Last year, the VGH+ Hometown Heroes Lottery raised $5.4 million to support health care across B.C.
