VGH aims to speed up cancer diagnosis in B.C. with new technology

A new, innovative machine has been implemented in the pathology laboratory at the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation to take over routine, non-complex tasks previously handled by technologists. By managing these straightforward procedures, the technology frees specialists to focus on more intricate lab work and innovation, ultimately expediting patient results.

With cancer remaining the leading cause of death in Canada, accounting for an estimated 255,000 diagnoses in 2026 alone, timely diagnostic support is critical. This equipment streamlines the continuum of care from initial diagnosis through treatment, reducing turnaround times and minimizing errors to ensure every patient receives targeted, high-quality care. It is projected that these automated systems will handle approximately 50% of the routine workload by the end of the year.
