Team Connect: Volunteering at North Shore Family Services
SOMA’s team spends the first Thursday of each month connecting through various activities selected by their employees. For May, the activity was to visit the Family Services of the North Shore to spend a couple hours volunteering their time to the non-profit organization.
Family Services of the North Shore is a non-profit, community-based organization that has supported North Shore residents for more than 60 years through counselling, education, family support programs, and volunteer initiatives. The organization provides services for children, youth, adults, seniors, couples, and families, with a focus on mental health, community connection, and supporting vulnerable individuals across the North Shore.
Its programs include affordable counselling, youth leadership and support initiatives, parenting and early childhood programs, grief and caregiver support, 2SLGBTQIA+ services, gender-based violence and trauma support, and community outreach programs such as the Christmas Bureau and Wonder Wheels bike program. Many services are offered free of charge or on a sliding scale to ensure support remains accessible to those who need it most.
In addition to its support services, the organization offers community resource spaces with a wide variety of clothing, a library of books, and daycare services for families in the community. It also features a new Grad section where seniors can select prom dresses, suits, makeup, and jewelry so they can fully enjoy their special day regardless of financial barriers.

SOMA Public Relations first connected with Lucy Isham-Turner from Family Services of the North Shore at the North Vancouver Chamber Business Excellence Awards in November 2024. Since then, the relationship has continued to grow through a tour of the Community Hub, supporting Cheer by the Pier through PR outreach and community event promotion, participating in the Christmas Bureau basket assembly, and returning in May 2026 for a spring volunteer session.
These continued collaborations strengthened SOMA’s connection with the organization and reflected a shared commitment to supporting the North Shore community.
